Barry Lewis
President
I have always loved to work with my hands to create things. After my first year of college I realized I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I took a part time job to earn extra money as a carpet installer's helper. The first day on the job with a four man crew we were sent out with 235 yards of carpeting, with take up and furniture. The head installer (God bless him) Decided that I should be taught how to do seams in carpet.(I later found out that hardly anyone is taught perhaps the most technical part of the installation process first).I learned a lot of things that first day on the job. Two things that really stood out, and are still with me today. The first was that if I didn't start out doing seams, I would have gone back to college, and if anyone has ever seen this trade done, and done right, you find out how hard this work can be.  Carpet is heavy, the tools are extremely dangerous, moving furniture is heavy, and your knees will take a beating.
That just a small part of the difficulties. I can tell you the good ones earn every penny. The second thing I learned, was that working with carpet, and doing seams is a art form that I had never considered. It was a very satisfying thing to put a seam together and defy someone to find it, and a real charge to win that challenge with a customer. With my first paycheck I bought my first seaming iron, and was working full time. I started collecting small remnants from various jobs, I would take them home, and would spend my spare time making border rugs, then I started cutting patterns, and inserting them into other pieces, I loved it. To me it was art, for me working with my hands creating something unique, it was satisfying. I also learned other people liked them too, and before I knew it I was selling them, and getting request for different types of rugs. I now own a very successful floor covering company, called Carpet One- Pawleys Island. I have been in this business for over 30 years; I still get that same charge I did when I first began. It still feels great doing a beautiful job. When you look your customer in the eye, and he says to you, Thank you, your guys did a great job, then our company has done it's job. I take pride in everything I do, and the people that work for me, are in business to make a living, but those same people work with me focused with one goal in mind, to do a job from start to finish that you will be proud of, and the rest will take care of itself.  Sincerely, Barry Lewis
